How Much Does Therapy Cost in Austin? Sliding Scale, Insurance and Affordable Options

Cost is one of the most common reasons people put off therapy. If you are looking for affordable therapy in Austin, it helps to know your options before you reach out. This guide explains how private-pay therapy works, how to use insurance and EAP benefits, and what sliding scale really means.

Why many Austin therapists are private pay

Many therapists in Austin, including most of our team, do not bill insurance directly. Private pay means you pay the session fee yourself. It also means your care is not limited by what an insurance plan will approve, and you and your therapist decide together how often to meet and for how long.

Couples counseling is a good example. Many insurance plans do not cover couples or marriage counseling at all, so most couples pay privately either way.

Ways to make therapy more affordable

  • Sliding scale spots. We offer reduced rates on a limited basis. Each therapist has a set number of sliding scale spots, so availability changes. Ask about it when you reach out.

  • Out-of-network benefits. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, we can give you a superbill, a statement of your session charges you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement. Learn more in What Is a Superbill?.

  • Aetna. Select clinicians on our team are in network with Aetna.

  • EAP benefits. Some clinicians accept Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefits through Lyra and Journey. Your HR or benefits team can tell you what your plan covers.

  • Session frequency. Some clients move from weekly to every-other-week sessions once things feel steadier. Your therapist can help you find a rhythm that fits your goals and your budget.

Questions to ask before you start

  • What is your fee per session, and how long is each session?

  • Do you have sliding scale spots open right now?

  • Are you in network with my insurance, or can you provide a superbill?

  • What is your cancellation policy?

If you are not using insurance, you also have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of what your care is expected to cost.

Other lower-cost options in Austin

If private pay is not possible right now, community mental health centers, nonprofit counseling centers and university training clinics often offer lower fees. Many employers' EAPs also cover a few sessions at no cost. If we are not the right fit financially, we are glad to help point you in the right direction.

What affects the cost of therapy in Austin

Therapy fees are not one-size-fits-all. A few things usually shape what a session costs:

  • The clinician's license and training. Fully licensed therapists such as LCSWs, LPCs and LMFTs often charge more than associate-level clinicians, who see clients under the supervision of an experienced licensed therapist.

  • The type of session. Couples and family sessions often cost more than individual sessions, because they are longer or involve more people.

  • Specialized training. Approaches like EMDR and DBT take extra training and certification, which can be reflected in the fee.

  • Session length and frequency. A longer session or more frequent sessions will change your monthly cost.

When you reach out, ask which clinicians have openings and how their fees differ. An associate-level therapist can be a great fit and a more affordable way to start. You can browse everyone on our team page.

Is therapy worth the investment?

It is fair to weigh the cost of therapy against everything else in your budget. Many people find it helps to think about what stress, anxiety or a strained relationship is already costing them, in sleep, focus at work, health and time with the people they love. Therapy is a chance to slow down and build tools you can keep using long after sessions end. A good therapist will also talk with you openly about goals, progress and how long you might expect to meet, so you can make decisions that fit your life. How to use a superbill, step by step

  1. Call the number on your insurance card and ask whether you have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits, what your deductible is, and what percentage they reimburse.

  2. Pay for your session at the time of service.

  3. Ask us for a superbill, which lists your session dates, codes and charges.

  4. Submit the superbill to your insurer through their app, website or mail.

  5. Track your reimbursement. Plans vary, so reimbursement is never guaranteed.

Using your EAP sessions

Many Austin employers offer an Employee Assistance Program that covers a set number of free counseling sessions each year. Check your benefits portal or ask HR how many sessions you have and which providers are included. Some of our clinicians work with Lyra and Journey, so it is worth asking.

Talking about cost on your first call

It can feel awkward to bring up money, but our team talks about fees every day and is glad to help. On your intake call, share your budget, your insurance or EAP details and how often you hope to meet. We will walk you through which clinicians and options fit, so you can start with a clear plan and no surprises. You can also send us an inquiry and we will follow up.

Therapy Cost FAQ

Do you offer sliding scale therapy?

Yes, on a limited basis. Each therapist has a set number of reduced-rate spots, so ask about current availability.

Do you take insurance?

We are primarily private pay. Select clinicians accept Aetna, and some accept EAP benefits through Lyra and Journey. For other plans, we can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Is couples counseling covered by insurance?

Often not. Many plans do not cover couples or marriage counseling. Learn more about our couples counseling in Austin.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for therapy?

Often, yes. Many health savings and flexible spending plans treat therapy as a qualified medical expense. Check with your plan administrator to confirm what is covered.

Why don't you list your rates online?

Fees vary by clinician, license level and type of session, and sliding scale spots change over time. Reaching out lets us give you accurate, current options instead of a number that may not apply to you.

What if I need to cancel a session?

Please cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged at your therapist's full rate.
