Most couples don't struggle because they don't care about each other. Often, they've developed patterns of responding to stress, vulnerability, and conflict that unintentionally create more distance.

One partner may seek reassurance while the other pulls away. One may want to solve the problem immediately while the other needs time to process. Over time, both can feel unheard.

Couples therapy creates space to slow down, understand these patterns, and begin responding to each other differently.

Fairy tale love, often portrayed in books and on TV, presents an idealized version of romance where everything is perfect. In reality, love isn’t always flawless—it involves moments of pain, requires forgiveness, and consistent effort and demands compromise. True love is built on the willingness of two people to face challenges together, working to make the relationship thrive, even when things get tough.

Maybe in your relationship, you’ve been going through:

  • Feelings of sadness, loneliness, or isolation

  • Anxiety

  • Unhealthy coping strategies like substance use or drinking

  • Suspicion, jealousy, or past betrayals that create a lack of trust

  • Decline in sex drive

You and your partner might also experience fatigue and headaches, as well as tension from avoiding conflicts. This can lead to irritability or frustration with friends, family members, or colleagues. Constantly focusing on relationship issues can make it hard to concentrate at work or in other areas of life.

If you have kids, the tension between you and your partner can also spill over into your parenting, making you feel more short-tempered or distracted. This can lead to less patience with your children or difficulty connecting with them the way you normally would.

In couples therapy, you can stop wondering where you or your partner went wrong and find viable solutions where you can work together to move forward and experience a healthier, happier relationship.

You’re Not Alone—It’s Normal For Relationships To Become Complicated

It’s common for couples to go through times when they need to step back, recalibrate, and get back on the same page. Most people can relate to this.

When two different lives come together, things can get complicated. Arguing or having disagreements isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, when it starts happening more often, and it feels like you just can’t see eye to eye—that may be a sign that it’s time to seek professional help.

Couples counseling is available to help you explore your problems, have honest conversations, and create room for lasting change in your relationship.

What Can Couples Counseling Help With?

Our therapists support couples navigating:

  • Communication and recurring conflict: Breaking cycles of criticism, defensiveness, withdrawal, or misunderstanding.

  • Trust and infidelity: Processing betrayal, rebuilding emotional safety, and exploring what repair requires.

  • Emotional disconnection: Feeling more like roommates than romantic partners.

  • Parenthood and life transitions: Navigating changes in intimacy, responsibilities, identity, and expectations.

  • Intimacy and vulnerability: Understanding emotional needs and strengthening connection.

  • Considering separation: Exploring relationship concerns and gaining clarity about next steps.

You don't have to wait until your relationship reaches a breaking point to seek support.

The Grace Therapy & Wellness Tailored Approach To Couples Counseling

During couples therapy sessions, we use a variety of methods to help you and your partner restore your loving connection.

Gottman Method for Couples Therapy

The Gottman Method helps couples improve communication and strengthen their bond by identifying harmful behaviors, such as the "Four Horsemen" (criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling). It also focuses on creating "Love Maps," which helps partners understand each other's inner worlds and ensure they are aligned on values and goals. The approach teaches couples how to better respond to bids for connection, improving emotional support and fostering deeper intimacy.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples

We use EFT to focus on improving emotional attachment by helping partners understand and communicate their needs more effectively. It allows us to identify unhealthy, protective responses, such as defensive communication patterns, and encourages partners to express vulnerability. Through EFT, couples work to strengthen their emotional connection, improve communication, and create a secure bond that fosters greater trust and intimacy.

We also incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in sessions to help couples improve communication by teaching them how to express themselves more clearly and teaching them emotion management. ACT encourages being present and accepting each other’s thoughts and feelings without judgment, while DBT focuses on finding a balance between emotions and practical solutions, helping couples connect on a deeper level.

Counseling with Grace Therapy & Wellness can help couples work on:

  • Communication skills

  • Conflict resolution strategies

  • Emotional and sexual intimacy needs

  • Trust issues

  • Examining family of origin influences

  • Navigating life transitions

You don’t have to feel stuck in your relationship. Whether you’re married or dating, in an LGBTQ or heterosexual relationship, navigating a new life transition, or living together or separately learning, healing, and growing together is possible—change is possible through therapy.

Considering Separation or Divorce?

Sometimes couples therapy isn't only about staying together. It's about gaining clarity. Whether you're actively considering separation or it comes up naturally as we work together, we're here to help you navigate that process thoughtfully and with care. We'll help you explore the history of your relationship, your communication patterns, and what each of you truly wants and needs moving forward, so that whatever path you choose, you can move forward with honesty and less regret.

Common Questions About Couples Therapy

I'm concerned about the cost of therapy.

Investment in couples therapy varies by clinician. During your free 15-minute consultation, our team can discuss fees and help you find a therapist who fits your needs.

I’ve tried therapy before and didn’t see any results. How will this be any different?

If therapy has not felt helpful before, it makes sense to have questions. Your therapist will listen to what did and did not work and collaborate with you on goals and an approach that fits your relationship.

I’m concerned that the therapist will take sides with my partner.

It’s natural to worry about feeling unheard. Your therapist will make room for both partners’ experiences and help you understand the patterns affecting your relationship. They may support or challenge each partner at different moments while working to ensure both are heard.

Is private pay therapy worth it?

We’re primarily a private-pay practice, which means your care is shaped by what you and your therapist decide is helpful, not limited by insurance requirements. Many clients value the added privacy, flexibility and focus that come with it. Select clinicians accept Aetna and EAP benefits through Lyra and Journey, and we can provide a superbill you may be able to submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Reach out and we’ll share rates and help you figure out what’s available to you.

Can couples therapy help if one partner is hesitant?
It is common for partners to feel differently about starting. A first conversation gives you both space to share concerns, ask questions, and decide whether the approach feels like a fit.

Can couples therapy help after infidelity?
Therapy can provide space to discuss the impact of betrayal, understand each partner’s needs, and explore whether and how to rebuild trust. Each couple’s process is different.

How long does couples therapy take?
There is no set timeline. Your therapist will discuss your goals with you and revisit your progress together.

Do you offer online couples counseling in Texas?
Yes. We offer virtual couples counseling for clients located in Texas, as well as in-person sessions in Downtown Austin.

What is the difference between couples therapy and marriage counseling?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Both offer support for relationship concerns, whether partners are married or not.
